UNM Resource into a Discourse Community
Most members of the community of el Centro de la Raza, share a common goal to advocate for the Spanish speaking students and to make el Centro a home away from home. Being part of the community of el Centro is amazing and so different for many people. We are a community who embraces our culture and try to let everyone know it is okay to be different and to love where you came from. El Centro is a friendly place that anyone can really benefit from no matter what ethnicity you are we will help you or welcome you into our community. You just have to walk in and introduce yourself and ask for help or simply say you want to be a part of our community. There are many different branches of el Centro that you can benefit from and learn which I have narrowed down to academic help, student support, and community outreach.
The first branch is academic help and what this is help with actual homework like tutoring. They also have CAPS at El Centro to help with things you struggle with. The second branch is student support which is means any kind of support. Beginning with financial help like scholarships and ending with needing someone to talk too. Lastly community outreach which is serving the community and helping. There are many different groups of community outreach like the Dream Team which I am a part of.
El Centro has been a big part of my life and has impacted immensely. It has made me open my eyes to how much a legal status is and the problems our community is facing. It has also taught me to value my culture and to really love my ethnicity. I have also impacted this community by being a part of the Dream Team, which is a community outreach program. We helped the community by holding DACA clinics. DACA is something which allows students or working people to legally work or study in the united states. A DACA clinic is where you renew your paperwork for your permit or renew the permit. This allowed me to help the community and to get more in touch with the community. I heard some really amazing stories that changed my views on people with different legal statuses. I thought that because this doesn’t affect me directly I shouldn’t care about it, but the reality of it all is that these are my people and this is my culture that is being affected so I should care. I definitely feel like I impacted the community. This is how I impacted the community and how it impacted me.
The main language aspect in this community really consists of Spanglish and anything that incorporates our culture. Language use and aspects of language are very important in a discourse community this is because it allows you to communicate or go more in depth in your community. First and fore most the language aspect of Spanglish. Spanglish is the mixture of Spanish and English. It is used in our community as a way to communicate amongst ourselves in a comfortable way. Spanglish is used because most of us are bilingual and if we can’t remember a word in the language we started speaking in we incorporate the other language. Although this is weird to other people for us this is normal and comfortable. Spanglish is essential in our community and to understand our community. The other language aspect is involving culture, we basically use this language aspect to attract other bilingual or Latino students to join we do this in pan flits and websites.
Although language is important we also have to keep in mind the two different people at el Centro. These are the staff and the actual members. The staff is extremely important they are there to answer any questions that you might have. They also arrange events that are very fascinating and show how one of a kind el Centro is. An example of this is Raza Junta which is an event held on August 30th every year where students can go and eat Salvadorian food and enjoy some Mariachi and poetry. Something else they do is that they inform you on everything that is going on and answer any questions. The other type of people are us the member or the people that benefit from the community. We are the reason why el Centro was created and why it is running today. We receive scholarships and help. We also are a great diverse group of people who love everyone and love our culture.
